Braving the biting November northerly wind we, with students from The Sherborne Learning Centre, took

to the water, Southampton Water that is, aboard The National Oceanography Centre's Research Vessel Callista.

Sea water light penetration and temperature/depth experiments were conducted and a seabed trawl caught,

amongst other things, a Thornback Ray.

A seabed sample was collected and examined by those prepared to brave the cold.  In the warmth of the

cabin we discovered how much microscopic life there is in the sea with a computer enhanced examination

of trawled plankton.

Although cold it was a very enjoyable and interesting day.
