On Friday 23rd June an impressive gathering of parents, carers and friends bade a fond farewell to our leavers in the traditional manner at DLC – our annual leavers’ day in the grounds of the Old Rectory.
Once again the Centre’s staff had been busy during the days leading up to the annual student send-off erecting marquees, decorating the grounds in bunting and preparing both hot and cold food for all those gathered to enjoy. In spectacular early summer sunshine - the country was gripped by a heat wave at the time - our new Headteacher, Katherine Seymour, took to the microphone to address all those in attendance including 17 of our school leavers.
After recognising the endeavour of students and staff alike, each Year 11 leaver was called up to receive their Record of Achievement from the Head herself to warm applause.
Later there were Curriculum and Special Awards to present and among the highest achievers recognised was Owen Freeman who received the coveted Headteacher Award alongside the Top Attendance Award. Owen had already picked up curriculum awards in ICT, Science and Geography to mark a very memorable afternoon for the sportsman who had helped lead DLC’s six-a-side team to a Dorset Learning Centres’ 2017 tournament success. Other high achievers included our John Holland Shield recipient Macy House who had earlier been awarded certificates for curriculum awards in Science, Cookery, Religious Studies & Ethics and her role on the Student Voice. Ulrica Tiso also enjoyed remarkable success over her year 11 as she won curriculum awards in three subjects – Maths, English and Girls’ Fitness – whilst also earning the plaudits for Top Student Behaviour and her work on the Student Voice. Furthermore, both Chelsie Wallace (Art & Lifeskills)and Will Heron (Sport, Sport Leadership) enjoyed double curriculum honours on their special afternoon.
